Integration of digital appliances in Demand Side Management systems

July 12, 2006

"Integration of digital appliances in Demand Side Management systems" is a new article written by representatives of the TEAHA Consortium - V.Cascio (Wrap), S. Bernasconi (EDF), G. Sauba (Advantica), J. Mendigutxia (Ikerlan) and A. Kung (Trialog) - addressing global energy management and saving in Europe, as definitely a key and clear point in the agenda of EU parliament. The European association of White Goods (appliances), so called CECED, already tackled this issue in the recent past, adopting Energy labels and producing appliances with lower power consumption. Anyway, the need for energy is continuously increasing and its use is somewhat unbalanced.
The TEAHA project (an FP6 IST co-funded project) is going to make a step forward in managing appliances with different behaviours. This article details potentialities and issues identified by the TEAHA consortium, and explains how the to push for standardization in that field can be achieved. The article "Integration of digital appliances in Demand Side Management systems" has to be considered as a tangible and easy-to-use TEAHA contribution to standardization in the area of demand side management services. A list of recommendations has been proposed to help with standardization of Energy and Load management in networked Homes and those recommendations will be proposed to major European organizations which are currently focusing on Home Interworking standardization, such as CECED.

TEAHA-related academic activities strengthened at the University of Twente

April 11, 2006

Every university, and Twente is no exception, has two main objectives, which are the education of students and conducting research. Research should be relevant and timely and must be reflected in the educational programme, especially in the masters and PhD programmes. Advances in home networking are important, because home networks are the enablers for relevant services in society. An example of such a service would be supportive infotainment for elderly people so they can live longer at home in comfort and with dignity. The need for these services will grow in the near future and it is the responsibility of the academia to educate experts that are able to invent, design, build and maintain these services and underlying technologies.
At the University of Twente the TEAHA Project has, and still is, pushing education and research in the area of home networking (as the major issue addressed by the initiative): new courses, graduation projects, PhD projects and a number of publications are efficiently backed by University of Twente's involvment in the TEAHA Project.
Contact: Hans Scholten, Home Networking Project Leader at the University of Twente.

The TEAHA Project selects inAccess Networks as Residential Gateway provider for the development of its open, seamless and interoperable home platform

December 12, 2005

The TEAHA consortium today announces that InAccess Networks has been selected as the main Residential Gateway (RG) provider for the development of TEAHA's open, seamless, interoperable home platform. TEAHA will use the MRG series of gateways to realize networking convergence and service delivery in the modern digital house. In particular, the MRG300 service gateway will be used to interconnect different clusters, while the MRG114 domotic adapter will enable distributed access to various in-home control networks. The MRG-300 multi-play gateway includes an ADSL router, a wireless access point and a mini PBX. It also incorporates QoS mechanisms, multicasting support for streaming video, and support for managed services using OSGi and UPnP. The MRG-114 wireless domotic controller integrates IP networking with home automation. It can be easily integrated into wireless or wired LAN, providing access over Z-Wave, ZigBee and LonWorks nodes. Being a UPnP bridge, the MRG-114 gateway ideally complements the MRG300 in the home environment. Services running on the MRG300 can take advantage of UPnP technology to access disparate home networks and offer lighting control, security, surveillance and energy management to the home user. InAccess Networks will also provide support during the integration phase of the project. They will assist in the installation of the TEAHA middleware and applications onto the RG, to form a complete, end-to-end, seamless interworking system. As the same InAccess components are also being used on other synergistic IST projects (such as ePerSpace, HomeTalk and VisionAIR), TEAHA sees strong potential for sharing knowledge and skills between the projects, potentially leading towards interoperability across the different platforms.

Wrap's industrial exploitation results from the TEAHA Project

November 25, 2005

One of the key TEAHA's objective is to develop an ultra low-cost powercord solution, so that white good manufacturers can offer a suited communication solution for all their models with limited extra cost per model. WRAP considers Ultra Low-cost Powercord technology, so called ULP, as a breakthrough technology in networking household appliance, and from Wrap's point of view, the scope is to implement this  technology in all new Indesit Company appliances: the cost of embedding this technology in home appliances is considered to be suitable enough to penetrate even low end market appliances. Benefiting from its involvement in TEAHA, WRAP is exploring the possibility to equip a family of new generation microcontrollers with embedded ULP peripheral to be available for any manufacturer interested. Moreover, on the Proxy side, WRAP will consider possible partnerships with main actors in the home networking arena in order to offer ULP Proxy devices. For more information about Wrap, please visit www.wraphome.com, for more information on the TEAHA Project, please contact us.

June 10, 2005

South East Asia is likely to be a key region in the coming years as far as connected homes markets are concerned. It is therefore seen by the TEAHA Consortium as one of the important target regions to be considered in the dissemination activities of the Project. This is why, after that the TEAHA Project results and perspectives were introduced at the EuroSingapore2005 event (in Singapore) in January 2005, they were also introduced this week at the EuroThailand2005 and EuroMalaysia2005 events (that took place, respectively, in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur) by Ganesh Sauba, Advantica Ltd, a partner of the TEAHA Project representing TAHI (The Application Home Initiative).

These 3 events, organised in the framework of the GAPFILL Project, coordinated by Sigma Consultants and supported by the European Commission (IST Programme), each attracted an average of over 250 attendees (including over 50 European ones). They aimed at strengthening S&T cooperation in the ICT field between Europe and South East Asian countries, and at more specifically inviting South East Asian organisations to be more involved in projects submitted for funding in response to IST Calls.

Presentations of the TEAHA Project at these events were focused on 2 main aspects of ongoing Projects developments: the TEAHA multicluster approach of global home platforms and the development of narrowband communications solutions. Many South East Asian organisations expressed a strong interest in these developments and the TEAHA Consortium is confident that the contacts established there and to be further developed in the coming months will usefully contribute to a larger exploitation potential of Project results and to a wider and more powerful TEAHA partnership through the involvement of leading South East Asian organisations in future phases of the Project.

TEAHA approach to service discovery issues
May 2 , 2005
TEAHA overall objective is to define a suitable middleware platform that will allow the seamless interworking of the wide range of appliances found in a home environment. To achieve this goal and ensure efficient interoperability across heterogeneous networks, the TEAHA Project addresses, among others, services discovery issues. Service discovery is the process where devices search, discover and control services of other devices automatically, without explicit configuration. Service discovery adds robustness to a system, because it takes care of initialization and recovery after disruptions in the system. It is one of the pillars of a zero-configuration environment, a logical requirement in a home environment, where no system administrator is present. The concept of service discovery is already present in many systems. However, in the TEAHA approach, service discovery and security are firmly intertwined and embedded in the architecture, and this is what makes TEAHA an innovative step forward.
For more information about the TEAHA approach to service discovery, please contact Hans Scholten (Home Networking Project Leader, University of Twente).

The TEAHA Project to be presented at the "Tecnologie ed economia della domotica" Conference, Pavia
August 26, 2004

A delegate from the TEAHA Consortium will contribute to the "Tecnologie ed economia della domotica: l‚uso razionale dell‚energia nelle abitazioni domotizzate" Conference to be held on September 20, 2004 at the Pavia University, Italy: Valerio Cascio (Home Networking Responsible, WRAP SpA). The paper to be presented will focus on "Power Modulation: Ultra Low Cost Power Line Technology to Make Connected Household Appliances".
Energy Management and other fruitful services would be available to end user if white goods are connected to an home network. Unfortunately it's not the case. Main obstacle is cost of communication node, the device that enables appliance to send and receive information on the home network. An innovative and ultra low cost point-to-point narrow band technology, so called "Power Modulation", is presented in this work for solving such a problem, enabling a bidirectional communication on the wiring between appliance itself and the outlet and proposing a "proxy approach" for doing it. Adopting power modulation for White Goods means moving around 95% of communication costs out of appliance, together with all issues related to standard technology adopted in the home network. Liberalization and standardization work will be highlighted here cause Power Modulation will be promoted as open technology standard to move network communication node out of appliances. Those processes are already started within the TEAHA IST project, where specifications and tests around Power Modulation are being carried out. TEAHA project assumes that appliance self-organizes data structure to be exchanged following CHAIN specifications (CECED Home Appliance Interworking Network) and leaving network management functions to the communication node. This approach is widely used, including for PCs where an ultra low-cost USB connection could be used to connect to a WIFI interface device.
Main issue for this edition of "Tecnologie ed economia della domotica" Conference is optimization of energy resources at home by using Home networking technologies. Stimula for discussion are Italian government commitments for energy saving, the wild spread of the electronic power meter, the role of builders. Together with those arguments a list of contributions are presented in perspective of integration. Overall intention is to investigate economic aspects and commercial issues, mainly in field of energy saving at home, together with potential approaches with the end user.

The TEAHA Project to be presented at the “Metering, Billing, CRM/CIS Europe 2004” Conference, Berlin
August 17, 2004
One representative of the TEAHA Consortium will contribute to the "Metering, Billing, CRM/CIS Europe 2004" Conference to be held on September 28-30 in Berlin, Germany: Paul Kopff (Research Engineer, Electricité de France R&D). The paper to be presented will focus on "Energy Management and Home Control Applications in the TEAHA Project: The Value of Metering Data for Smart Home Service Providers". Some (electronic) power-meters have ports on which the consumption information - apart from other parameters - is transmitted. Particularly, EDF/EURIDIS power-meters deployed in France have two ports: one can be asked for the information in an addressed way, and is exclusively used by the power-meter owner for remote metering; the other port - if properly configured - outputs this information continuously (at a sampling rate shorter than two seconds) and may be linked to customer devices for smart home management. Power suppliers are very interested in using this potential to offer innovative tariff management that is truly versatile and proactive. But the valuable data output from the power meter could be sold to other service providers, to implement smart adaptative energy/cost/in-house-load-control tools, that could be moreover designed to cooperate - if needed - with the billing services to implement customer managed cost saving strategies. The presentation will stress this perspective of such B to B interactions in a community of service providers and the exclusive advantages of the "Open Service Gateway initiative" (OSGi) standard with that respect.
Metering Europe 2004, the leading conference of its kind in Europe, will be held in conjunction with Billing Europe 2004 and CRM/CIS Europe 2004 and will offer answers to current challenges facing utilities, vendors, and specialists.
